Advanced Teacher Training
(Yoga Alliance RYS 300)

REQUIREMENTS and PREREQUISITES for the 300 Hour SmartFLOW:
Our Advanced Training is adaptable to your needs and time frame. Work towards your certificate as intensely or as gradually (up to 3 years) as it suits your schedule and skills. We offer 10-11 day 100-hour intensives and 5-7 day 35/50-hour intensives as well as Weekend Modules.

If you’d like to become SmartFLOW and/or Yoga Alliance registered at either 200 or 300 levels:
1) Begin with Abhyasa, our foundational intensive.

    OR

2) Complete our Online course at YogaGlo:The Heart of SmartFLOW Yoga. These 15-hours are non-contact hours according to the RYS curriculum. Please email us to set this process up. .

To complete your 300-hour Advanced Training, continue on adding Advanced and Teaching Skills modules as you can. You may take these in any order to add specific skills and hours to your advanced training within a 3 year time. All modules must be completed to meet RYS 300 curriculum requirements.
Completing your 200-hour with SmartFLOW (or another RYS 200) along with our 300-hr Advanced Training, will make you eligible to register as an RYT 500.

Advanced Modules

SAMA SADHANA

Our Advanced 75-hr Intensive

Sama means even, or balanced as in Samasthithi or even standing pose. This pose teaches us to balance the body right and left, front and back and up and down; further it asks us to sense our feeling of being grounded with our need to feel free. And lastly it suggests that in our personal concerns we acknowledge the truth that we are part of or a greater, spiritual whole. Sadhana is practice: our daily Yogic practice. Sama Sadhana = Even, balanced Practice.

In this Intensive, you will reflect on and aim to balance your body, mind and heart similarly in all the poses we practice and in all the Movement Principles* that we explore. This will be a demanding and transformational workshop, moving you through the limbs of Yoga.

SAMA SADHANA includes

  • Follow each Movement Principle to its fullest, advanced expression along its continuum
  • Sense your own subtle balance of effort and return; and your balanced needs for both power and rest
  • Consider each Movement Principle and its specific supports in all 3 Planes of Motion
  • Assess and practice Hands-on-Assists for each MP family
  • Anatomy to support each MP
  • Learn essential Restoratives for each MP
  • Daily Pranayama
  • Meditation
  • Philosophy (reading assignments will be given)

Sama Sadhana is a 75hr Intensive, as part of Annie’s SmartFLOW 200/300hr Yoga Alliance Certified Curriculum. You will learn primarily through your own daily practice -- to advance your own practice and to become a more sensitive and intelligent teacher. There will be also be lectures, demos and lab time. (*Note: Movement Principles are an essential element of SmartFLOW methodology; the online course will ground you in these concepts.)

VIVEKA

Our Advanced 100-hr Intensive

Viveka is a beautiful Sanskrit word that literally means discrimination. It describes an ongoing practice through which we discern the un-changing essence of life as distinguished from the impermanent, phenomenal nature of all things.

This training intentionally integrates Subtle practices into Advanced Asana. Each day we will weave multiple layers—Koshas—into our awareness, setting the stage for personal transformation and discerning exactly which practices are essential to each of our needs. Through these practices, we begin to distinguish the increasingly subtle effects each of the practices offer, and over time we determine that which furthers and maintains us – and our students – on our spiritual paths.

VIVEKA includes


DEVELOPING AUTHENTIC PRACTICE:

  • Daily advanced asana, pranayama and meditation practice to awaken the mind, body and spirit
  • Taking the SmartFLOW principles deeper; exploring the edge where avoidance and denial present themselves
  • Creative sequencing for specific populations and intentions
  • Pranayama: observe how the breathing patterns reveal unconscious mental patterns and can help break them
  • Investigation and Integration of the Subtle Body: Koshas, Prana Vayus and Chakras
  • Maha Bandhas in asana and pranayama practice
  • Dharana & Dhyana: paths to focus the mind (find a meditation practice that you will stick to!)
  • In-depth study of the Bhagavad Gita with John Casey, PhD

This 12-day/100hr course is part of Annie’s SmartFLOW 200/300hr Yoga Alliance Certified Curriculum. In addition to the actual in-class time, the course includes reading, written homework and a practicum.

Our Advanced 50-hr Intensive

Sama: even, balanced.
Krama: to progress, step by step.
The Art of Sequencing: Creating a meaningful and intelligent Yoga sequence is an art, and a skill – that can be learned and honed into a fun and deeply satisfying art for you and your students.

The heart of this 50-hour intensive is in the strong morning Asana practice. Each daily practice will highlight an essential aspect of sequencing; afternoons will be spent mapping the sequence, generating alternate “itineraries” and modifications, and illuminating each of the elements that great sequences all share.

PREKSHA

Our Advanced 50-hr Intensive

Preksha: Clear Seeing

Preksha is a beautiful Sanskrit word that means seeing, beholding, reflecting. In this Advanced Module we will explore ways of seeing clearing: Our own practice and lives, and the practices of our students. We will seek out blockages and patterns and look to make clarity and fluidity.

In this 50-hr Intensive, you will reflect on and aim to balance your body, mind and heart similarly in all the poses we practice and in all the Movement Principles* that we explore. This will be a demanding and transformational workshop, moving you through the limbs of Yoga.

THE PELVIC GIRDLE

Our Advanced 40-hr Intensive

The Pelvic Girdle: Intelligent + Intuitive Embodiment

Each weekend will be a mix of FUNctional anatomy to ground us in practice; specific Asana sequences relating to the area focus, assessing and assisting essential poses, and longevity and therapeutic practices.

PELVIC GIRDLE includes

Weekend 1: GROUND. Feet, knees, thighs as “flying buttress” to pelvis

  • 3 arches and 4 corners of the feet
  • Ankles, shins and healthy knees
  • 4 orientations of the hip joints: standing and seated asana
  • Healthy Twisting

Weekend 2: Sacral KEYSTONE. Building pelvic stability as a base for the fluid spine.

  • Asymmetrical poses and S-I joint stabilization
  • Padmasana: pathways and contraindications
  • Psoas system: releasing v stretching = fluid and strong
  • Happy sacrum: your essential keystone

THE SHOULDER GIRDLE

Our Advanced 40-hr Intensive

The Shoulder Girdle: Root to Fly

Each weekend will be a mix of FUNctional anatomy to ground us in practice; specific Asana sequences relating to the area focus, assessing and assisting essential poses, and longevity and therapeutic practices.

SHOULDER GIRDLE includes

Weekend 1: ROOT: Shoulder v Shoulder Girdle

  • Healthy ROM (range of motion) for the shoulder
  • Rotator cuff support
  • Movements of shoulder blades and clavicles
  • Thoracic Spine stability in shoulder flexion; extension
  • Healthy “vinyasa”

Weekend 2:FLY

  • Cervical spine stability inshoulder flexion; extension
  • Mechanics, preparation and contra-indications for inversions
  • Connect: support for your voice, figuratively and literally
  • Text neck: release and strengthening for today’s world

THE ART OF TRANSITIONING

Our Advanced 50-hr Intensive

Whether your practice is Asana or Pranayama, Chanting or Meditation in the end we are “presencing” – returning to the present moment again and again. In the moments between the poses, between the breaths, and between the thoughts we have the opportunity to truly rest in presence.

As we all know, Yogis don’t get injured while in a pose; it is coming into and out of a pose — when our attention lapses  — that we may create strain or injury. We’ll look at some of the classic Yoga transitions and bring the power of our attention to them, seeking gaps in our concentration and physical areas of deficit or over-efforting.

TRANSITIONING includes

Designed for Teachers and experienced Yogis, you’ll practice the essential pose elements, slow transitioning, assessing alignment and hands-on adjustments. Join Annie and the SmartFlow tribe for a week dedicated to all kinds of Smart Transitions, evoking mindfulness and strength, and being in this present moment.

THE SPINE

Our Advanced 50-hr Intensive

Spend 7 days diving into your backbone; literally and figuratively. This immersion is designed to teach you the anatomy of the spine, both physical and energetic; learn practices, both specific and exploratory to embody the balance of stability and mobility of your spine. Expect deep Asana practices, assessing and assisting essential poses, and therapeutic practices relating to each area of the spine.

THE SPINE includes

  • Understand each section of the spine and the sensitive transitions between them
  • Consider anatomic variations in the spine, and ways to support them
  • Understand the many tissues that make up the spine, and what movements may compromise them
  • Learn about the nadis, the flow of Prana and how to encourage the upward flow through the Sushumna
  • Balance all 6 directions of movement in the Spine
  • Experience the intimate relationship between your spine and your breath
